What you're attempting to do is putting the neighboring notes and alter the rhythm with the original melody series. Remember in jazz improvisation there's no a great way to go about it. jazz education is an easy to use way for you to get started. Experiment with various other tunes on jazz CDs. Use your hearing to dictate what notes to make use of. Soon enough you will discover other ways to be able to improvise.
