Nearly 1 in 5 quickly age 12 in the U.S. is affected by herpes. It's caused by a virus - either the herpes virus type 1 (HSV-1) or the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both strains may cause genital herpes, but HSV-1 usually infects the mouth and produces fever blisters.
